West Side (Ward B)
The West Side of Jersey City is an area made up of several diverse neighborhoods on either side of West Side Avenue, one of the city’s main shopping streets. The West Side is the suburbs of Jersey City; filled with Victorian and Edwardian type homes, large backyards, and gardens. In the 1800’s, the Dutch established themselves up on the hill of West Bergen (the original township), to avoid flooding and the seasonal changes that come with living on the river’s edge. In the 20th century, wealthy individuals looking for summer residences or havens away from the urban neighborhoods began to populate West Side. Downtown Jersey City was established as “working class” while the hill became a place for the upper class. West Side is currently home to many diverse communities and neighborhoods, as well as NJCU who have doubled the development and buildup of their campus over the past decade and will be the future home of Bayfront along the Hackensack River.
The neighborhoods in the West Side are Hackensack Riverfront, Country Village, Croxton, Droyer’s Point, Lincoln Park/ West Bergen, Riverbend, and Society Hill.
