Smiles and laughter were in no short supply this past Saturday with kids filing into Kmart to celebrate the 5th annual Shop with a Cop event facilitated by the Hudson County Sheriff’s Office. This event has successfully bridged the gap between the community’s youth and local law enforcement by letting the children pick which officer they would like to shop with, opening the lines of communication. Given this opportunity officers are able to develop rapport with the next generation building long lasting relationships and mutual respect. Each child was given $50 to pick out any items that they want or need going into the holiday season, however it’s not uncommon for an officer to pick up the rest of the tab so these children get exactly what they need. Initially starting out 5 years ago with just 10 kids, this event has grown into a beautiful community gathering, bringing joy to 100 kids and their families.

They started off the event with donuts and candy for everyone.
