Celebrating National Nonprofit Day in Jersey City

National Nonprofit Day takes place on August 17th and is a day to spread awareness to organizations working tirelessly to create change. In Jersey City, diverse nonprofit organizations are doing great work to help homeless animals, empowering women, mutual aid efforts, refugees and more. Angela Cares 

AngelaCARES is in Jersey City to be a helping hand and strong support for seniors, their caregivers, and young people alike. They are all about educating and empowering youth to get involved and volunteer while providing advocacy and assistance to senior citizens and their caregivers. Flow Initiative 

The Flow Initiative is a local organization committed to eradicating period poverty and accelerating access to menstrual health products nationwide in Hudson County, New Jersey. Founded by the visionary Eiko La Boria, The Flow Initiative has already made a remarkable impact by distributing over 1 million products to women, girls, and members of the LGBTQ+ community. Greener JC

Greener JC is your go-to non-profit for all things environmental in Jersey City. They aim to create a more sustainable future by spreading the word about waste and energy reduction to back sustainable development. One of their resources includes a Green Business toolkit helping local businesses become more sustainable through grants, education, and outreach, specifically around waste and energy.

Liberty Humane Society 

LHS’s mission is to foster a community of compassion and respect and give animals in need a chance at a lifelong, loving home. They are the local municipal shelter serving Jersey City and Hoboken. The shelter has many pets looking to find their loving homes, and if you cannot adopt, they also look for fosters. Check out their list of adoptable pets here and ways to get involved. 

 

Sustainable JC

Sustainable Jersey City is a collaborative network of green community groups and individuals within Jersey City who have come together to advance efforts to move the city toward a more sustainable and resilient future. The organization leverages community assets to create program that increase community knowledge and engagement, support existing sustainability initiatives, and enable systemic change from the grassroots level. The Salt Foundation Inc.

SALT Foundation gathers healthy and quality food that would be thrown away from generous grocery stores. It then distributes it to homeless shelters, food pantries, soup kitchens, women’s shelters, community groups, churches, community fridges, and special events. We Care Movement

We Care Movement’s mission is to provide support, assistance, and guidance to the homeless or less fortunate. The organization has various campaigns that directly support the community’s needs. From providing the homeless with gently worn or new clothes to assisting mothers with furniture and children’s clothes, the team is always ready to lend a hand to the community in need. 

 

Welcome Home Jersey City

 Welcome Home Jersey City is a community-based nonprofit organization that provides educational, employment and material support for refugees, asylees and asylum-seekers in the Jersey City area. They welcome volunteers to help out with their fun club, tutoring, translation, client employment support and have many other ways to use your skills to help refugees. Women Rising

For over 117 years, WomenRising has been the foremost community-based organization for women in Hudson County. They assists women and their families to achieve self-sufficiency and live safe, productive, and fulfilling lives, through social services, economic development, and advocacy services.
