You can celebrate this day and appreciate photography by exploring galleries, learning new tips and tricks, and supporting local photographers. Check out the list below of ways to celebrate World Photography Day here in Jersey City!

History of World Photography Day

World Photography Day, celebrated on August 19th worldwide, has a fascinating history dating back to 1837 when Frenchmen Louis Daguerre and Joseph Nicephore Niepce introduced the revolutionary ‘Daguerreotype,’ marking the birth of the first photographic process. This innovative technique quickly gained popularity, replacing time-consuming hand-painted images with accurate representations of faces and scenes. Photo studios started emerging across the globe as photography gained more popularity. On August 19, 1839, the French Government acquired the patent, opening doors for people worldwide to participate and immerse themselves in photography.

Photography tips

Photography is a great hobby to explore if you’re new and looking to try something new. It allows you to develop your style and learn as you go. Photography offers endless possibilities as you can dive into portraits, landscape photography, wildlife and more. Here are some tips to help you capture the perfect moment!

  • Make sure you research and understand the type of equipment you are working with, as you can take incredible photos using your smartphone. There are many different types of cameras, from DSLRs to compact cameras. Understanding the features and settings will take some time, but once you start experimenting and becoming comfortable, you will begin capturing incredible moments!
  • Use the rule of thirds: Divide your frame into nine equal segments with two equally spaced horizontal lines and two equally spaced vertical lines. Place your subject along these lines or at their intersections.
  • Consider the story you want to tell when taking a photo. A photo truly is a thousand words!
  • Patience and Practice!
