Historic Downtown (Ward E)
Historic Downtown is home to many cultural attractions including the Jersey City Museum, the Hudson and Manhattan Railroad Powerhouse (planned to become a museum and artist housing) and the Harsimus Stem Embankment along Sixth Street, which a citizens’ movement is working to turn into public parkland.
Jersey City’s Historic Downtown covers a large area, and contains three sub-neighborhoods (Hamilton Park, Harsimus Cove and Van Vorst Park), each of which is a historic district. Housing is most likely to be found in any number of the elegant old low-rise buildings that comprise most of the buildings in the neighborhood. Living in Historic Downtown, whether directly on a park, or the areas in between, means you’ll generally be situated on pretty, quiet, tree-lined blocks.
Residents of the Historic Downtown area are never far from transportation options, either the PATH Train, with its easy connections to New York City’s MTA Subway system, the Water Taxi and NY Waterway ferries that carry commuters across the Hudson River, or via the Light Rail, which is an excellent way to get around Jersey City itself, as well as travel to adjoining New Jersey communities such as Bayonne and Hoboken.
The neighborhoods in Historic Downtown are Grove Street, Hamilton Park, Harsimus, Boyle Plaza, Van Vorst Park, The Village, West End, Hudson Waterfall, Exchange Place, Harborside Financial Center, Newport, Paulus Hook, and Powerhouse Arts District.
